It’s always a pleasure to taste with Dominique Lafon, the man who truly needs no introduction. Comte Lafon, in my mind, is the best white wine domaine in Burgundy and year after year I’m astounded by the fact that the wines are getting better and better. The vineyards were totally converted over to biodynamic viticulture [...]

Gérard Mugneret  is one of those great but very much under the radar producers who we love to support. The Mugneret name, like many names in Burgundy, can be found on the bottlings of at least 5 domaines off the top of my head so figuring out who’s making what where can be a bit confusing. Especially [...]

The third installment in Madlib’s Medecine Show series, Beatkonducta in Africa is brilliant instrumental hip-hop collection based on obscure and mainly independent afro-beat, psyche and soul tracks from Ethiopia, Zambia, Nigeria and anywhere this great music was being recorded in the golden age of Africa’s early 70′s. Release set for March 23rd, available on vinyl [...]

Pretty notes of rose and tree bark. Clean, balanced and lacy texture, precisely Chambolle. Ripe red fruits, fullish mid-palate, good density for a villages level bottling. Persistent acidity in check with fruit. Detailed, with good length. Last tasted 03/13/10

I must admit to my indifference towards the wines of this domaine. I’ve always found them to be somewhat unfocused and a bit dull. They seem to make wine pretty much the same way everyone else seems to make wine here; they employ a sorting table, de-stemming , cold-soaking, temperature control in fermenting, some new [...]

This was my first visit to Bonneau du Martray and it was long overdue. I’ve always loved Corton-Charlemagne - it’s the only grand cru white Burgundy on my winelist -  particularly this house, as much for its consistently high quality year after year as the value this domaine represents. Bonneau du Martray is the only domaine in Burgundy that, now that [...]

Drouhin ranks, in my mind anyway , in the top tier of négociants here. They definitely have a consistent house style, like most merchants, an elegant, finesse driven style I happen to like. They also happen to own a lot of land here, in many of the best sites including this one. Drouhin owns the [...]

Tasted out of a half-bottle. Rich aromas of flowers and a bit of honey, none of the brighter citrus or mineral I’d expect from a 2007 Puligny, especially considering that Chalumeaux is upslope and a bit steeper than many of the other 1ers crus. No undue oak treatment apparent. A bit hot however and lacking [...]

I don’t drink much domestic pinot noir but I taste an awful lot of them and I actually like a lot of what’s coming out of Mendocino, the ”true” Sonoma Coast, Santa Rita Hills and Oregon . After I tasted this wine, I was curious to read what Robert Parker had written about it. I wasn’t expecting to be [...]

During a trip here last fall, Russell had mentioned a new restaurant in Pommard and had tried, unsuccessfully, to make reservations there for lunch on a couple of different days that week. The chef/owner, Jean-Christophe Moutet, worked for years alongside the likes of Roland Chanliaud at Jardin des Remparts in Beaune and Jacques Lameloise [...]
